Delay to Maryland Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance program signed into Law
A Maryland law delaying implementation of the Family Medical Leave Insurance “FAMLI” program by at least 18 months passed into law and was signed the Governor on May 6th. According to the revised timeline, contributions to the fund are set to commence on Jan 1, 2027. Benefits may be applied for “no earlier than Jan 1, 2027 and no later than Jan 1, 2028,” with the law’s language deferring to the state’s Secretary of the Department of Labor to set the starting date of the state’s benefits administration.
The bill was proposed early this year by the Maryland Department of Labor to allow the state time to evaluate the impacts of state budget concerns and recent federal funding decisions that may impact workers and state programs.
