Life at Unum

Join us in our world-class workplace

A vibrant employment culture that attracts great talent and values every voice doesn't happen by accident. At Unum, we're dedicated to building and nurturing a dynamic and welcoming workplace — one that embraces differences, fosters collaboration, and encourages employees to bring their best ideas to work every day.

Our culture makes us stronger

As a workforce of 10,000 people in locations across the U.S., U.K. and Ireland, we celebrate diversity and value the contributions of every member of our team. We discourage bureaucracy, and stay focused on delivering great customer experiences with every interaction. And everyone at Unum knows we are all individually responsible for growing our careers and learning from our experiences.

But that doesn’t mean employees are on their own. Far from it. The personal and professional development of our people is a front-and-center element of our business every day. Resources range from professional development and learning opportunities to programs that support the financial, emotional and physical well-being of our colleagues. When it comes to reaching our potential as a business, we know employees who are reaching their own fullest potential are the key to success.

A great place to work is one where:

  • people of every background have the tools to grow and reach their full potential.
  • no one feels limited or excluded from the opportunity to contribute and learn.
  • the working environment help us be more receptive to novel ideas and new ways of thinking.

A Workplace of Integrity

Since 1848, Unum continues to do the right thing for our employees and the people we serve. Our culture of integrity is more than a phrase, it's part of our employee value statement. Operating with strong ethics and open and honest communication is the role of every employee — and is paramount to our success.

Live and work your best

Our company is built on helping individuals and families, and this starts with our employees. We want employees to maintain a positive work-life balance, which is why we provide access to benefits and resources they need to enhance their health and well-being.

Pay and bonuses

Based on market trends and local data, our salaries are competitive. We reward beyond the bi-weekly paycheck, too, through ongoing recognition programs and conferences and an annual bonus incentive plan.

Holidays and time off

We all need to recharge. Employees start with 17 paid days off, plus extra days for holidays. Paid time off increases based on tenure to 30 days, plus holidays. New parents — mothers and fathers – also have access to six weeks of paid parental leave.

Tuition reimbursement

We know the value of lifelong learning. To support professional development, eligible employees can be reimbursed up to $5,250 per year for qualified education expenses. Part-time employees may receive up to $1,500.

Health and wellness

There are multiple options for health benefits, including medical, dental, vision and prescription drug plans. Walk around our main offices and you’ll see more investments in wellbeing, with onsite fitness facilities, health resource centers, education programs, walking workstations or sit-stand desks.

Financial foundations

We help our employees with their financial safety net by providing life and disability income protection insurance, and offering them options to purchase accident, critical illness/cancer or hospital indemnity coverage.

Preparing for the future

Retirement may be a long way off, but the planning and saving should start early. Our 401(k) match program is dollar for dollar for 5% of base salary. On top of that, the company makes a defined contribution of 4.5%. Fidelity and Ameriprise are partners for financial education and investment tools.

We believe in giving back to our communities

Our dedication to making a positive difference in people’s lives is about more than the benefits we provide. Our corporate giving efforts primarily focus on benefiting organizations that support education, health and wellness, and arts and cultural initiatives.

We work in great spaces

We've recently kicked off a multiyear modernization of our main home offices to transform our workspaces. Our new spaces spark greater collaboration, innovation and flexibility, and introduce upgraded food service and fitness amenities for employees.

Minimizing our impact on the environment

Improving quality of life for the people and communities we serve includes protecting the world around us.
