Our employees

We believe diversity among employees, with their varying perspectives and talents, enriches our organization, products and services, the communities in which we live and work, and each other. Unum’s active diversity efforts include the establishment of an Inclusion & Diversity Office, employee-directed resource groups for a variety of minority and special interests, frequent programs and speakers on diversity-related topics, and both mandatory and voluntary training on inclusive practices and behavior.

All employees affirm the Code of Conduct and conduct training on these topics annually. We have zero tolerance for harassment, discrimination, bullying and retaliation, and follow our Performance Improvement & Disciplinary Policy to appropriately address issues.

We have multiple procedures to resolve employment-related problems as quickly and confidentially as possible. Based on our values and commitments, we strive to resolve problems in a manner that is respectful to our employees and considers the interests of all concerned.

Consistent with our focus on diversity, health and wellness, we recognize safety as a key priority. Unum strives to provide a safe work environment and give employees the knowledge and resources needed to perform their job in a safe, secure and healthy manner. We will not tolerate any threats or acts of violence on company property or, for work-related reasons, off company property.

Our business

Unum’s commitment to fairness and integrity in the workplace is evident in its corporate policies, including the Code of Conduct, Environmental Policy Statement and human resources policies. The Human Capital Committee of Unum’s board of directors oversees the development, implementation and monitoring of the company’s human capital policies and strategies, including workplace and employment practices. The Governance Committee also reviews environmental, governance and corporate social responsibility matters of significance for the company.

The importance we place on ethics is demonstrated through ongoing communication with our employees through videos, written communications and training designed to help our employees better understand and appreciate the importance of ethics to our business, culminating in an annual Ethics Awareness Week.

Our employees have access to an Ethics Helpline and additional resources dedicated to dispute resolution through which questions, concerns and complaints can be raised and resolved anonymously. Employees are strongly encouraged to raise ethics, discrimination or harassment matters, and to report suspected violations of applicable laws, regulations and policies. Retaliation for raising these concerns in good faith is strictly prohibited.

We perform due diligence with key vendors and suppliers to ensure our business partners also have established and documented professional ethics and integrity programs and, in the U.K., compliance with the Modern Day Slavery Act. Our supplier standards are highlighted in our Supplier Code of Conduct. We are guided by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights as we strive to continually develop improvements to business practices in our own operations.

Unum’s nearly 10,000 employees in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland and Poland are committed to supporting the communities where we live and work and meeting the needs of others. We build stronger communities by focusing significant resources in three main areas — education, health and wellness, and the arts — in the form of monetary grants and in-kind donations. We encourage employee engagement in community outreach by providing time off for volunteer activities and matching employee giving to qualified organizations. We also forge strong partnerships with educators and other organizations that help us determine how best to support people in our communities.
