Unum, local partners bring ‘Check Your Blind Spots’ diversity tour bus to Chattanooga

Visitors enjoy virtual reality during the mobile diversity bus tour to learn more about unconscious biases.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (July 25, 2019) – Unum (NYSE: UNM) and several local partners are bringing the CEO Action Mobile Diversity Bus, an interactive tour bus and learning experience raising awareness of unconscious bias, to Chattanooga Monday, Aug. 5. The tour bus will be parked at Unum’s headquarters and uses virtual reality, gaming technology, and other interactive activities to teach visitors about unconscious biases, or ‘blind spots,’ that can potentially influence their behavior in the workplace and community.

Although Unum is the host company, several local partners and their leaders are championing inclusion in the workforce and the broader community by inviting their employees to tour the bus, including BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce, City of Chattanooga, and EPB.

“Unum and our partners share a focus on inclusion so we can make our communities great places to live and work for everyone,” said Rick McKenney, president and chief executive officer of Unum. “Our goal is to foster communities that embrace differences so people of every background have the opportunities to grow and reach their full potential.”

McKenney signed the CEO Action pledge, which is a commitment to creating safe spaces for complex discussions about diversity and inclusion, implementing and expanding unconscious bias education, and sharing best practices for inclusion. CEO Action is the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity and inclusion within the workplace.

The event is open to the public and will take place Monday, Aug. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Unum’s Chattanooga headquarters (Parking Lot A at the corner of Walnut Street and 4th Avenue). Opening remarks from Mayor Andy Berke and other area leaders begin at 11:30 a.m. The tour is intended to help people recognize, acknowledge, and minimize unconscious bias.
