Why Disability Insurance?

How important is a paycheck to your employees? Are they living paycheck to paycheck? Studies show that more than half of all Americans do.1 Do your employees understand that their worker's compensation coverage will not provide a financial benefit for accidents or injuries that occur off the job?

How important is employee productivity to your company? If an employee is out of work due to a disability, how sharply is your bottom line impacted? Would ensuring that your disabled employee is receiving appropriate, timely assistance and services be meaningful to you and your company?

Disability insurance provides financial benefits to employees when they are unable to work due to a disability caused by a covered illness or injury, regardless of whether or not that illness or injury is work-related. When that disability insurance is purchased through Unum, it also provides your employees with dedicated, experienced claims management and vocational rehabilitation assistance. In turn, you and your employees both benefit from our attentive claims service and return-to-work support services. Use our disability insurance calculator to learn more.

What's the Chance of Experiencing a Disability?

  • At the turn of the 20th century, thirty-three million Americans were classified as severely disabled.2
  • Three out of every 10 workers between the ages of 25 and 65 will experience an accident or illness that keeps them out of work for three months or longer.3
  • Nearly 60% of injuries happen off the job, which means employees are not covered by worker's compensation benefits.

Unum's group and individual long term, short term and supplemental disability insurance plans — available in both employer-paid or employee-paid options — offer a range of coverage options that can be coordinated to meet the specific coverage and benefit needs of both your company and your employees, regardless of their position or income. Why Life Insurance?

Probably the most commonly understood insurance product, life insurance is considered a necessity by most individuals. It's also the most common insurance benefit provided by employers, after medical benefits. Yet millions of Americans are underinsured: in fact, during the past two decades, the number of households in America without life insurance has increased by 103% — even though the number of households has risen only 39%.1

Statistics emphasize the need:

  • Between 1995 and 1997, almost 40% of all deaths that occurred were people between the ages of 25 and 64.2
  • More than half of Americans live from paycheck to paycheck.3

Unum offers a range of group and voluntary term, universal and interest-sensitive whole life insurance plans for smaller businesses, as well as optional accidental death and dismemberment coverage. Plans are available in either employer-paid or employee-paid options, so specific coverage and budget needs can be easily met. Use our life insurance calculator to learn more. Why Long Term Care Insurance?

The need for long term can affect people at any age. In fact, more than 12 million Americans currently need long term care.1 Expenditures for nursing home and home health care totaled $117.1 billion in 1998. Medicare covered only 18% of that. Medicaid (available only after your assets have been depleted) covered 39%. Almost 30% of it — more than $35 billion — was paid out-of-pocket by individuals.2

While long term care needs can be devastating to your employees, they can affect you as well. Consider: an employee who is dealing with long term care needs for a family member may experience increased absenteeism, lowered productivity and morale, and an inability to participate in needed business travel. As awareness of the impact of long term care on individuals and businesses has grown, long term care insurance has become one of the most rapidly growing employee benefits today.

Unum offers group and individual long term care insurance benefit plans that can be tailored to meet the needs of your company and your employees, using either employer-paid or employee-paid options. Why Voluntary Critical Illness Insurance?

While medical and disability insurance help to cover the costs of most critical conditions, there are many hidden costs that may not be covered by these benefits. These can include private nursing, home health care, medical treatment outside specific networks, insurance and prescription co-payments and deductibles, etc. Critical Illness insurance can help fill many of these gaps in coverage. Critical Illness is specifically designed to help provide protection against the high costs associated with covered serious illnesses. Available only as an employee-paid voluntary benefit, this unique coverage is an ideal benefit enhancement to your employer-paid or employee-paid disability insurance coverage.
