Group Long Term Disability (LTD) Insurance

Unum is the nation's leading provider of group LTD benefits. Our plan designs cover the majority of income protection needs for your employee population. We offer:

Group Short Term Disability (STD) Insurance

Unum's group STD plan provides income replacement for shorter periods of time and is designed to integrate well with LTD benefits. If a disability covered by STD benefits extends beyond the specified benefit period, the STD claim merges seamlessly into integrated Unum LTD benefits. This means that, for every disability, claim management starts early, maximizing opportunities for a faster return to work for the employee. Select Disability Insurance

Unum's newest group offering provides choice at both the employer and the employee level and the flexibility to tailor coverage to best meet the diverse needs of the employee population. Select disability insurance offers:

  • A range of funding options 100% voluntary (employee paid) or shared funding between employer and employee
  • Employer choice of benefit duration, range of elimination periods, and maximum income replacement percentage
  • Employee choice of benefit amount (in $100 increments) and elimination period
  • The ability to elect a very short elimination period with a long benefit duration within one policy

The Select disability insurance offering includes the Educator Select plan that is specifically designed to include features and provisions that are important to the education market.

State Statutory Disability Plan Coverages

Five states (California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island) have state mandated (or statutory) short term disability programs, each with unique provisions and guidelines around how employers must comply with these programs. Unum administers statutory plans in four of these states (California, Hawaii, New Jersey and New York), applying our full spectrum of claims management resources in each. We offer fully insured statutory coverage in Hawaii, New Jersey and New York and self-insured statutory plans in California, New Jersey and New York.

Unum's short term income protection plans are designed to integrate easily with state mandated disability plans, which allows enhanced benefits where state mandated benefits may be insufficient, or when consistency of benefit programs between employees based in statutory and non-statutory states is needed. STD and LTD Self-Insurance Services

Administrative services for self-insured group STD and LTD income protection plans include claims administration and disability risk management services. These services are an attractive option if you wish to retain plan and funding responsibility, but outsource for best-in-class claims administration. Unum offers a range of services to meet specific needs, allowing you to reduce the burdens of administering disability claims internally. Supplemental Individual Income Protection Insurance

Basic LTD and STD plans offer a good foundation of income protection for all employees. For certain classes of employees, however, especially those who are highly compensated, additional coverage may be needed. Unum's supplemental individual disability plans can be integrated into your overall benefit program to meet these needs. Features of the plans include:

  • Available guaranteed standard issue programs
  • Guaranteed renewable and non-cancelable contract options
  • Multiple levels of available coverage
  • Benefit increases available with increases in income
  • Income replacement of up to 100%

Life Insurance

The group term plan is available under a variety of funding options, including employer-paid, employee-paid, and flexible base/supplemental. Unum's group LTD, group term life and long term care plan designs also include the added value of various employee-specific services that can help your employees every day — whether or not they file a claim. The services are available with your Unum contract, eliminating the need to purchase similar services from additional vendors. These employee services include:

  • Work-life balance employee assistance program* in the form of 24-hour toll-free access to professional advice, referrals and counseling. The assistance can help keep employees at work and productive, while allowing them to deal with challenges such as parenting, child care, elder care, addiction and recovery, legal issues, education and more.

    * This service is included with Unum's LTD plans and available with group term life plans.

  • Worldwide emergency travel assistance services, providing immediate support for employees and their families who experience medical or personal emergencies while traveling more than 100 miles from home. This service is available with Unum's LTD and group term life plans.
  • Access to LTC Connect®, an information and referral service for long term care policies, as well as access to discounted rates for long term care services and equipment. These services are included with Unum's group and individual long term care policies.
  • Survivor financial counseling services, at no additional cost, provides comprehensive, objective and customized financial planning to terminally ill employees or covered spouses, or their survivors. This service is available on group term life plans.
