UNUMPROVIDENT CORPORATION TO PRESENT AT CITIGROUP
FINANCIAL SERVICES CONFERENCE;

FOURTH QUARTER 2005 EARNINGS RELEASE DATE RE-SCHEDULED TO ACCOMMODATE

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Jan. 12, 2006) – UnumProvident Corporation (NYSE: UNM) announced today that it will present at the Citigroup Financial Services Conference on Wednesday, February 1, 2006. Thomas R. Watjen, president and chief executive officer and Joseph M. Zubretsky, senior executive vice president, finance, investments and corporate development, will represent UnumProvident and are scheduled to speak at 4:30 p.m. (Eastern). Mr. Watjen and Mr. Zubretsky will focus on UnumProvident’s fourth quarter 2005 results, general business strategy and future growth opportunities. The company also announced today that in order to accommodate its participation at this conference it has moved the schedule for its fourth quarter 2005 earnings announcement and conference call. The company will now release its fourth quarter 2005 results on Monday, January 30, 2006 at approximately 4:00 p.m. (eastern).
