UNUMPROVIDENT TO HOLD 2005 INVESTOR MEETING
ON OCT. 17, 2005; WEBCAST INFORMATION PROVIDED

CHATTANOOGA, TN. (Sept. 14, 2005) – UnumProvident Corporation (UNM) announced today that it will hold its 2005 Investor Meeting on Monday, Oct. 17, 2005. The Company had previously announced that the meeting would be held on Sept. 21; however, the Company is hopeful that the new date will enable the Company to provide a material update on the status of the discussions, or potentially a settlement, with the California Department of Insurance concerning its examination and investigation of claims handling and other issues.

The Company will provide a live webcast of its 2005 Investor Meeting to be held on Monday, Oct. 17, 2005. About 15 minutes prior to the start of the meeting, you should access the “Investors & Shareholders” section of the company’s website at www.unumprovident.com. Management presentations will begin at 10 a.m. (Eastern) and will cover company operations, financial reporting, business performance, opportunities and earnings outlook. The meeting is scheduled to conclude at 4 p.m. (Eastern). A complete schedule of presentations will be posted on the company's website at www.unumprovident.com in the Investors & Shareholders section by Oct. 10, 2005. A replay of the webcast and accompanying slides will be available on this site for two weeks beginning Oct. 18, 2005.
