UNUMPROVIDENT TO PARTICIPATE IN WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON AGING AND DISABILITY

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (July 20, 2004) – UnumProvident (NYSE: UNM) will share results of its latest research on the aging American workforce at this week’s Disability Mini-Conference in Washington, D.C.

The White House Conference on Aging Disability Mini-Conference, July 21-22, 2005, will host leading stakeholder organizations, policymakers and opinion leaders as the nation prepares to tackle the challenges facing its aging workforce and populations with disabilities.

UnumProvident vice presidents Kenneth Mitchell and Alexandra Cook will discuss research completed by UnumProvident – a study of the aging American worker and the impact this massive work population will have as it moves through later work years and into retirement.

“Aging is not a disease, nor is it a disability,” says Mitchell, vice president of corporate return-to-work development. “The business and health leaders at this conference understand that getting older and disability do not have to reduce one's social independence, or creative and productive contributions. We are honored to contribute to this conversation.”

The conference will be attended by officials from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Education, and prominent representatives of the aging and disability communities.

UnumProvident’s contributions will help address a wide range of issues including policy questions surrounding the aging of the disabled population, the politics of aging, disability and economic security, protecting social engagement and productive aging, the future of community living, and the improvement of productivity and health for aging or disabled populations. The mini-conference is a precursor to The 2005 White House Conference on Aging being held in December 2005.
