Massachusetts by the Numbers
Year 2000 census figures put Massachusetts' population at 6,349,097.
Worcester A City for the 21st Century
Worcester, a five-time winner of the prestigious All America City
Award, has a population of 176,000. It is New England's third largest city and
the site of a diverse and pioneering economy. Currently, there are construction
projects under way totaling more than $1 billion including the spectacular
restoration of historic Union Station. The Station's renovation into an
intermodal transportation center (with MBTA commuter rail service between
Worcester and Boston and daily Amtrak rail service from Worcester with
connections to Chicago, Hartford, New York, Philadelphia and Washington) has
provided the city with a beautiful new icon. The new Worcester Medical Center,
just across the street from Worcester's Centrum Centre, completes the city's
new Golden Triangle that also includes the Worcester Common Outlet Mall. Other
projects include City Square, Gateway Park, Union Station/Washington Square,
Regional Justice Center and Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor. For
