Tennessee by the Numbers
Tennessee became a state in 1796 with a total population of 77,000. It is now the 36th largest state with a population of 5,689,283, according to the 2000 census. The name "Tennessee" originated from the old Yuchi Indian word, "Tana-see," meaning "The Meeting Place." White men traveling in the area in the 1700s associated the word with the name of a Cherokee village and as the name of a river in Cherokee Territory.

Chattanooga is Tennessee's fourth largest city with a population of 155,554. Chattanooga is located in Hamilton County, with a population of 307,377.
