Portland
Portland is an old seacoast town that exhibits all the attributes of a Maine coastal community. But as Maine's largest urban area, it's also the state's financial and cultural center. More than 3,000 Unum employees and their families call the Portland area home.

The heart of Maine

Portland and the Greater Casco Bay area feature some of the best that Maine has to offer, from museums and arts centers to historic districts and coastal parks. And don't forget the great lobster feasts and other world-class dining that's made the area famous.

Portland beginnings

Union Mutual, a predecessor company of Unum, was charted in 1848 and relocated from Boston to Portland in 1881, taking up residence downtown in an unused opera house. The company's present suburban campus was opened 30 years ago.
Portland routinely receives national recognition including being named one of two "best cities for mid-level professionals" in Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine; "boom town list of hottest cities for entrepreneurs" in Inc. magazine; a top travel destination and one of the best places for business and careers in the U.S. by Forbes magazine. Portland is also an easy drive to places like Boston (111 miles) and Montreal (280 miles).
