Qualifying for benefits
How do I know if my condition qualifies as a disability?
All disability policies have a "definition of disability" that identifies what requirements qualify a person as disabled under the terms of the contract, but policies vary quite a bit in their definitions. The best way to find out what your policy considers a disability is to read the definition of disability in your Unum policy booklet, certificate or summary plan description.
What is a pre-existing condition?
A pre-existing condition is a medical condition that you were treated for before you obtained insurance.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Your Unum policy may not provide coverage for a specific period of time for a pre-existing medical condition. Refer to your Unum policy booklet, certificate or summary plan description for more details.
What is a waiting period?
Once your employer hires you, you must wait a set period of time before you are eligible for benefits.
What is an elimination period?
An elimination period is the time between the beginning of your disability and the time when you can begin to receive benefits. This period may vary according to your plan.
