Benefit payments
What is an offset?
When you receive income from a source other than your Unum disability benefit, such as workers' compensation or Social Security Disability Insurance, it may be deducted from your total disability benefit from Unum. That deduction is called an offset.
Is my disability benefit taxable?
Whether your benefit is taxable depends on who pays the premiums. If your employer pays the premiums for your disability insurance, your benefits are taxed. Under current tax laws, your disability benefits are not taxed if you pay the premiums. If you and your employer share the cost of your disability premiums, the portion paid by your employer is taxed. Please refer to your tax advisor for further questions about the taxability of your benefits.
Please remember
You can always review your Unum policy booklet, certificate or summary plan description for more information. If you have further questions, please call Unum's customer service line Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. ET at 866-679-3054.
