As tax season gets underway and Americans start filing tax returns for 2014, many are learning for the first time that they are subject to penalties for not having coverage during 2014.
To help prevent those individuals from facing similar penalties next tax season, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has opened a special 2015 enrollment for federally facilitated public exchanges. Individuals without coverage can enroll if they:
The special enrollment will be open from March 15 through April 30, only in states using federally facilitated exchanges. Individuals who enroll during this period will still be subject to penalties for the months in 2015 when they did not have coverage. Some individuals without coverage will have an additional opportunity to enroll for coverage this spring instead of waiting for the traditional annual enrollment period, thus avoiding penalties for some months of 2015.
