Understanding Trends

Are you meeting the needs of your diverse workforce?

America’s population is changing, and so is the makeup of America’s workforce. According to the 2010 census, the Hispanic population now makes up 16% of the total U.S. population.1 By 2050, it is projected to make up nearly 30% of the U.S. population.2

Different cultures — common needs

It can be challenging to provide the right level of benefits information when employees come from different countries and cultures. Many Hispanic employees are unfamiliar with benefits. In addition, since a large percentage of Hispanics speak Spanish, it can be difficult to provide the language support they need.

One thing is for certain: the economy has highlighted the financial vulnerability of most Americans — especially those with extensive family obligations. By providing a choice of benefits through the workplace, you can provide essential financial protection to employees who may not be prepared for life’s unexpected events. Unum can help you meet the needs of your diverse workforce and reach them with the right benefits message.

Encouraging trends:
Did you know...

Hispanics are responsible for half of our country’s employment gains since early 2010. In fact, Hispanic workers make up nearly 15% of the country’s workforce, according to Labor Department data.1

The growth of the Hispanic population over the past decade has been good for our economy. Unlike some European countries that are losing population, America is holding steady due to growth in the Hispanic community — helping guard against oversupply in the housing market. And more families mean more need for homes, which support growth in the housing market.2

High Hispanic birth rates are expected to help fund Social Security. Unlike countries that are losing population and the ability to fund public programs, America is holding steady due to Hispanic population growth.3 Social Security is one such program expected to benefit from Hispanic birth rates.4
